.... I don't know what happened to me. But.... I'm at the police station. And I can't call home. My dad can't know. And I don't know what to do or what got into me these past few days but...

I'm sorry.

[Then she hangs up, but the number is really not hard to miss on the caller id.]

[There's a slight pause. Maybe the sound of her swallowing as she tries to think.]

I met her. Or I talked to her. I almost forgot she was my mom for awhile. Well... sort of... you know what I mean... [She actually sounds pretty sad through most of this. Like she's been crying or is trying not to cry.]


God. She's amazing...



I just. Wanted to check on you. And.... yeah I needed to just say this.

[ Dexter forces himself to dial back her number. His hands are shaking a bit, and clammy. And he realizes he's been sitting in the dark for hours. He's listened to Candy's voicemail at least a half a dozen times already.

It starts to ring and he almost starts himself, overtaken by an unreasonable urge to hang up.

He stays on the line, though it takes some effort. And when he speaks his voice sounds a bit rough, gravelly. ]

[Candy's been laying on her bed this whole time. Her phone was actually put up because she didn't expect a callback. But when she heard it ring she jumped up and grabbed for it quickly, checking the caller id.]

Dexter! [She said a little breathlessly as she clicked it on before relaxing again, taking in a deep breath and calming herself.]

You didn't have to call back.

Hey. [There's a pause before she presses on trying to sound both formal and supportive at once. Really it just seems a little strained. She feels an emotional connection to some woman who has no idea who she is. She's dreading what could happen to her.]

I know now isn't exactly the best time for this kind of talk but, I like to have things in order. I only know her from those fake memories but, it is how we really met so it's too late to start get picky about it now.

... Let me just get to the point. I wanted you to know that when the times comes I can protect her. Easily. Just let me know when.

[There's a pause.] Bruce is the talker but, I'm pretty good at sitting with people. If you just want to have someone around for a while I can do that.
